Garden Self-evaluation: June

Weigela shrubs bloom in June

Love this!

Weigela shrubs bloom in June, with an abundance of tubular flowers all over the shrub. In my yard, these shrubs are near the street in a hot rock bed with minimal water. Right now, they’re gorgeous and I love them and so do the bees. We can’t grow Rhododendrons here (the soil is too alkaline), but Weigela is a great substitute. These shrubs should be pruned after flowering to maximize next year’s blossoms. This one definitely needs some pruning and shaping. By the way, it’s pronounced “why-jee-la.”

Floribunda Roses bud in June

😀Growing Up!😀

I’ve noticed Floribunda Roses around town are in full bloom, but mine are only just budded with a few flowers. That’s OK, plants have their own timing and I know they’re going to be great! I’m keeping a close eye out for Japanese Beetles which infested my roses and several other plants last summer. If you also had these nasty invasive bugs, check out this blog post or this CSU fact sheet.

Irises are spent by June

😕Was fun, all done😕

I like Irises; I just wish their blossoms lasted longer. It was a good year for Iris and for a few weeks they were really pretty. Now I need to cut down the spent flower stalks. I cut them as low as I can reach with a good pair of sharp scissors. The sword-shaped leaves stay green for the rest of the summer and don’t need to be removed until fall or even next spring. Iris are low-water use plants that don’t mind the heavy clay soil here in northern Colorado.
