Garden Self-evaluation: March

Netted Iris

Love this!

These sweet little flowers are called Netted Iris, technically Iris reticulata. They’re only about 3″ tall but the flowers look just like their taller cousins, Siberian Iris. They bloom for just a couple of weeks in the early spring and feed bees and other pollinators. I love them because they show up so early in the spring!

Cold frame and lettuce

😀Growing Up!😀

I planted lettuce in my cold frame last fall and it survived all winter. While I didn’t get to harvest much over the winter, we enjoyed a fresh lettuce salad this past week. Now that the soil is warming, I expect these plants to really take off! I also have potatoes in the cold frame and I see a few of those sprouting already, too. Without the protection of the cold frame and the soil heat coil, I’d just be starting lettuce seeds in the next couple of weeks.

Branch Pile

😒Not Amused😒

I’ve gathered up a rather large pile of twigs and branches that all came off my neighbors’ trees. Their trees are Little-leaf Cottonwoods, also called Desert Willows, and they are so very messy. Every time we have a wind storm, I get all the broken branches in my yard. Now to be fair, these neighbors aren’t the ones who planted the trees and they get a share of twigs and branches, too. This is probably why it is one of my pet peeves when large trees are planted right on the property line, and I try hard to avoid that in my designs.
